Victory for Road Safety: Average Speed Cameras Approved for Victoria Avenue East

We are thrilled to announce a significant success for road safety in our community, thanks to the dedicated efforts of our Year 11 GCSE Citizenship cohort.
Back in November 2024, Citizenship students started their community action program. They started by looking at current issues in our local area. After some in-depth research, pupils found road safety on Victoria Avenue East to be a local concern. Recognising the potential dangers of speeding, they embarked on a powerful campaign, creating social media accounts, petitions and lobbying our local Councillors: Basil Curley and Tracey Rawlins, advocating for the installation of average speed cameras. Within the academy, pupils delivered assemblies to ensure pupils are safe when crossing busy roads.
Their hard work and persuasive arguments have paid off. We are incredibly pleased to confirm that the advocacy campaign was successful, and average speed cameras will indeed be installed on Victoria Avenue East. This is fantastic news for everyone who uses this road, especially for the safety of our pupils and families travelling to and from school.
This achievement is a testament to the power of active citizenship and demonstrates how young people can make a real and positive impact on their local area. Our Year 11 Citizenship pupils have not only learnt about civic responsibility but have also put it into practice, making our community safer for all. We extend our warmest congratulations to them on this outstanding accomplishment.
