Shadows: A Spine-Tingling Triumph in Gothic Writing Competition

The English Department recently ran a Halloween Competition that concluded with a chilling display of pupil talent, as they put their descriptive writing skills, honed during the recent 'gothic stories' topic, to the test. Tasked with crafting their own spooky tale or poem under the evocative title "Shadows," pupils delivered entries that were both atmospheric and unnerving.

The competition showcased the impressive depth of creative writing across Year 7. We are thrilled to announce the talented pupils whose mastery of the gothic style earned them a top spot:

  • 1st Place: Iradat S (7/4)
  • 2nd Place: Anayah P (7/7)
  • 3rd Place: Fabiha A (7/8)

Iradat, Anayah, and Fabiha demonstrated exceptional control over mood, imagery, and suspense, successfully transporting readers to worlds haunted by the unseen and the unknown. Their chilling depictions of 'shadows' truly captured the essence of gothic literature.

Miss Wright, Teacher of English, commended the high standard of the submissions. "We were incredibly impressed by how effectively the pupils applied the techniques we studied in our gothic stories unit," she said. "The entries were full of rich, descriptive language and palpable atmosphere. It was a genuine challenge for the judges to pick the top three, but Iradat, Anayah, and Fabiha truly demonstrated a sophisticated mastery of building tension and mood under that single, compelling title: 'Shadows.'"

Huge congratulations to all the winners and a heartfelt thank you to every pupil who participated and helped make this year's competition a resounding success!
