Joy and Literature: World Book Day at Co-op Academy North Manchester

Wednesday, 4th March was a standout day for Co-op Academy North Manchester. It was World Book Day; a celebration of literacy, creativity, and community. From the quiet contemplation at the outdoor readathon to the vibrant efforts of our staff in the costume contest, the academy was alive with the magic of the written word.
Spring Air and Stories
Our outdoor Readathon took place in the courtyard throughout the day, and provided a breath of fresh air for pupils and staff in need of a break from their daily schedules. We were treated to a beautiful Spring day, with bunting flapping in the air and daffodils in full bloom; it was the perfect space for readers to tuck in with a good book.
The readathon was about more than just escapism. It provided a much needed respite for busy minds to unwind with a good story. Reading for just ten minutes a day is proven to significantly reduce stress and boost empathy.

Seeing the staff and pupils sitting side-by-side in the Spring breeze, among the daffodils, the sunshine, and the World Book Day bunting was a peaceful, reflective moment. Everyone was lost in a different world, one they’d chosen themselves. At Co-op Academy North Manchester, we aim to foster an inclusive, community-led environment by connecting every child with their inner reader.
Meanwhile, the academy underwent a literary makeover. Our English department brought wonderland to life by garlanding their corridors in World Book Day bunting and Alice in Wonderland themed decorations. The science department channelled the Shire, with Hobbit holes decorating the walls.

And The Winner Is...
Of course, World Book Day wouldn't be complete without a friendly, interdepartmental costume competition. So how did our school full of literary legends fare?
After much deliberation, we are thrilled to announce our World Book Day 2026 costume competition winners:
3rd Place: The Cover Supervisors provided a much appreciated dose of nostalgia to those of us who remember the beloved Bananas in Pyjamas!

2nd Place: The English Department took us down the rabbit hole with a perfectly whimsical Alice in Wonderland ensemble!

1st Place: The Science Department was our champion for 2026! Their epic transformation into the cast of The Lord of the Rings taught us the true meaning of attention to detail and dedication.

We’re a community of lifelong learners, and seeing our pupils and staff together was a powerful reminder of that. A huge thank you to our English Department, our Library and the teachers who played a part in organising the event, and to our pupils who showed that, even in the digital age, you can always count on a good book for some literary joy.
