Justice in Action: Year 10 Citizenship Pupils Experience Mock Trial with Local Magistrates

Our Year 10 GCSE Citizenship pupils recently had an exciting opportunity to step into the shoes of legal professionals, as local magistrates visited the academy to host an engaging and educational mock court trial.

The special session provided our pupils with a unique, hands-on insight into the workings of the criminal justice system. Under the expert guidance of the visiting magistrates, our Year 10s took on various roles within the courtroom, including defendants, witnesses, prosecutors and even members of the bench.

The mock trial, carefully designed to mirror real-life proceedings, allowed pupils to apply their classroom learning to a practical scenario. They grappled with evidence, deliberated on arguments and ultimately experienced the complexities and responsibilities involved in delivering justice.

Ms Anderson, Head of Personal Development, added: "This invaluable experience directly applied to their current GCSE Citizenship curriculum, where pupils are exploring why laws are essential, how they shape our everyday lives, and the practical workings of the justice system in England and Wales, including the roles of the police and courts. Beyond legal understanding, the mock trial significantly enhanced their critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork abilities."

We extend our sincere gratitude to the visiting magistrates for dedicating their time and expertise to provide such a rich and memorable learning experience for our Year 10 Citizenship pupils. Having welcomed back Magistrates into the Community for a 5th time, we are grateful for their time and congratulate them on their King's Award for Voluntary Service.
