Year 7 Art Update – Monster Thumb Pots and More!

This term, our Year 7 pupils have been getting creative with clay, crafting their very own scary monster thumb pots!

As part of this exciting project, they explored the artistic techniques involved in working with ceramics, while also gaining insights into the science and engineering that go into every piece. From understanding how clay transforms in the kiln to learning about structure and form, pupils discovered that ceramics is a blend of creativity and technical knowledge. They also explored the wide range of careers connected to the world of ceramics, from ceramic artists and designers to materials scientists and engineers.

This is a hands-on project that also formed a cross-curricular link with English, building on the monster theme from the novel ‘A Monster Calls’ they studied earlier this year. Through their reading, pupils explored how writers use metaphors and descriptive language to reveal a character's personality and how emotions can shape and transform people. The clay monsters gave pupils a chance to bring these ideas to life in a visual way! It’s been a wonderfully hands-on and inspiring experience, and we’re so proud of their imaginative creations!
