On Monday, June 16th, ten of our bright Year 8 and 9 pupils showcased their exceptional talents at the Greater Manchester Science and Technology Challenge Day, held at the prestigious University of Manchester. This highly anticipated event brought together pupils from across the region for an exhilarating day of hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) challenges, designed to foster problem-solving, teamwork, and innovation.

Our pupils truly rose to the occasion, immersing themselves in a series of engaging activities alongside peers from various schools. They were placed into mixed-school teams, encouraging collaboration and diverse perspectives. The challenges included:

  • The Lego Robotics Challenge: Where teams programmed robots to expertly navigate a complex course.

  • The E-FIT Forensics Challenge: Utilizing facial recognition software to solve a simulated crime scenario, much like real forensic scientists.

  • The Vehicle Challenge: Constructing and refining battery-powered cars, put to the test in a thrilling speed trial.

  • The Medical Diagnostics Challenge: Simulating the vital role of a doctor, using real-world techniques and equipment to diagnose patient conditions.

Our pupils' dedication and aptitude were evident throughout the day, leading to some truly remarkable achievements:

  • A huge congratulations to Adam and Ewan, who were runners-up in both the Lego Robotics and Vehicle Challenge! Even more impressively, they were also part of the overall winning team for the entire day, securing their spot in the regional finals scheduled for January.

  • Joy and Dorcas demonstrated keen analytical skills, earning them the runner-up position in the E-FIT Forensics Challenge.

  • Deborah and Palmer showcased their diagnostic prowess, as part of the winning team for the Medical Diagnostics Challenge.

"All our participating pupils represented our school with outstanding enthusiasm, maturity, and collaborative spirit," commented Miss Pantziari. "They are a real credit to our school community. This experience provided an invaluable insight into the world of STEM and the exciting possibilities within these fields. We eagerly await the regional finals in January!"
