Co-op Academy North Manchester expands further maths offer

High-performing maths pupils at Co-op Academy North Manchester have this year been offered the chance to go beyond the maths curriculum with the introduction of Level 1 Further Maths.

Designed to support those sitting the higher level maths GCSE, this additional programme helps pupils deepen their understanding of complex topics, boosts their confidence and prepares them for A-Level study should they choose to take maths beyond GCSE.

The opportunity is part of the Trust-wide Maths Excellence Programme, which supports pupils identified through strong performance in their KS2 SATs. All pupils across the Trust take an end-of-Year 9 assessment, and those demonstrating high potential are invited to take on Further Maths.

At North Manchester, the Further Maths cohort for 2024–2025 has grown significantly, reflecting the strong interest and ability among pupils. Sessions are led by the academy’s Graduate Maths Excellence Specialist alongside another member of the maths team, ensuring expert guidance and tailored support.

The Further Maths provision forms part of the wider Co-op Academies Maths Excellence Programme.

The programme offers a rich mix of opportunities, including:

  • Enrichment clubs and online study support

  • Whole-Trust revision days

  • Competitions and maths-focused career exploration
One-to-one and small group booster sessions

  • CPD and collaboration for maths staff across the Trust

The initiative aims to raise attainment in maths, increase uptake at A-Level and beyond, and unlock future opportunities for students passionate about the subject.
