Diversity Day

Dear Parents and Carers,
I am writing to you to outline our plans for a positive end to the school year with Diversity Day on Monday 21st July.  There will also be an early finish at 12:30 pm on Tuesday 22nd July.

Diversity Day: Monday 21st July

We are excited to be celebrating Diversity Day on Monday 21st July, a special event where we recognise and enjoy the many cultures that make up our academy community.   Diversity is a broad term which supports expression of individuality and different ways of life, traditions, and values - it is not limited to cultural heritage and can be interpreted in lots of different positive ways.  This idea was presented to me by a group of pupils who had formed a committee to ask for a day of sharing, learning, and celebrating the unique backgrounds, traditions, and stories that shape who we are and it promises to be an uplifting end to the academy year.

Supporting Your Child with Dress and Participation

Diversity Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the unique backgrounds that make up our school community. It's important to remember that Diversity Day is not a non-uniform day. Pupils are still required to wear their standard school trousers or skirt and school shoes.  However, we encourage pupils to express their culture, heritage, or identity by adding items to their uniform.  Participation is not mandatory and pupils may decide to just wear their usual uniform but if your child does wish to participate, they may add:

  • A culturally themed t-shirt instead of their shirt and tie with usual school trousers or skirt and usual school shoes.  Vest tops are not permitted.

  • Cultural accessories like scrunchies, ribbons, or necklaces.

  • A small amount of face paint such as a flag on the cheek - but not a full face of paint.

Diversity Day is an opportunity for pupils to celebrate our rich community. To ensure everyone has a positive and respectful experience, it's really important that all participants remember to avoid anything that could be considered offensive; avoiding stereotypes or offensive symbols, slogans, or imagery and keeping in mind our academy values of Trust, Respect and Commitment.

Cultural Performances and Displays

Throughout the day pupils will receive a curriculum which celebrates different ways of life and pupils are invited to take part in a red carpet event with their forms. Pupils may choose to perform:

  • Traditional dances
  • Poetry in another language or inspired by a tradition
  • Musical performances or songs

During the red carpet event pupils can sign up to wear full cultural dress by seeing Miss Beaumont in Art.

Early Closure: 12:30 on Tuesday 22nd July

On the final day of term, pupils will be dismissed after their afternoon registration at 12:30pm for the summer holidays.  All school bus services have been informed of the early finish time and we wish all of our families an enjoyable summer holiday.

Yours Sincerely,

Tabitha Sloper-Russell
