On Wednesday, June 18th, to mark Refugee Week, our Year 7 Library Leaders and a group of nominated Year 7 pupils embarked on a special trip to the magnificent Manchester Central Library.
Their adventure began in the historic Shakespeare Hall, where they were treated to a truly wonderful guided tour. Pupils were fascinated by the library's rich history, including a visit to the vault where its oldest book, an incredible 800 years old, is carefully preserved.
Following the tour, they were honoured to attend an inspirational audience with the internationally acclaimed author, A.M. Dassu. Manchester Libraries had extended this special invitation, and Ms. Dassu did not disappoint. She captivated pupils with powerful and moving stories from refugees she has met, bringing to life the themes of her impactful books. A.M. Dassu is the brilliant mind behind 13 children's books, including Boy Everywhere, Fight Back, and Kicked Out, which have garnered over 55 awards, including prestigious nominations for the Carnegie Medal and Waterstones Children’s Book Prize.
Her works are available for pupils to borrow and read from our school library, offering further opportunities to explore these important narratives.
"The trip to Central Library was incredibly fun! The staff were so kind and full of fascinating information, and meeting the author A.M. Dassu, who was so grateful for us being there, was a highlight. Seeing the fabulous books, especially the 800-year-old one, was amazing – I even loved the smell of the old books!" Said Sophia, Year 7
The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day. They were thrilled by the chance to meet A.M. Dassu in person, engaging her with insightful questions, and equally delighted by the unique experience of touring the famous Manchester Central Library.
