Thank you for a wonderful first half-term of highs at Co-op Academy North Manchester - with some real achievements to note in this week’s NOMA News:

Firstly, congratulations to all of our Year 11 pupils who are now over half-way through their exams.  Year 11 have been attending revision tenaciously both after school and at weekends - taking full advantage of all the help and support available to them.  Staff have been working tirelessly to help our Year 11s be at their best at this key time and hope that pupils will continue to revise over half-term whilst also enjoying a well-deserved break!

Congratulations also to the 730 individual pupils who were rewarded for their outstanding behaviour across this half-term.  This week, each year group recognised pupils’ individual achievements through rewards’ assemblies and on Friday were invited to year-group celebratory events to say a big well done!

Another highlight has been the recent visit from Manchester United and England international footballer Hannah Blundell who visited the academy with a film crew from ITV Granada as part of this year’s FA Cup Trophy Tour.  This was a wonderful opportunity for sporting achievement and creativity to collide as pupils created supportive ribbons and took part in a football skills session with the Manchester United Foundation.

Now for an update: as a way to help deliver key positive messages and important reminders, we have launched a Co-op Academy North Manchester Instagram account so if you use the platform, we encourage you to also receive our news via @coopnorthmcr in addition to @coopacademynm on Facebook.  As always, contacting the academy is easy via noma-enquiries@coopacademies.co.uk.

Looking to the first week back: an important reminder that all pupils return to the academy on 2nd June at 8.30am for form-time with a free breakfast available from 8am.  There are so many exciting events and opportunities planned for the new half-term - not least the Co-op Academies production of Sweeny Todd starring some of our pupils on 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th July at Co-op Academy Manchester (M9 0WQ) - please get your tickets here: www.ticketsource.co.uk/cam.

Until then, wishing you all an enjoyable and restful half-term break...

Best wishes

Mrs Sloper-Russell

Peer Mentors support Year 7 pupils with reading and literacy

We’re proud to share the fantastic work of our dedicated pupil peer mentors from Year 9 and Year 10, who are making a real difference in our school community.

Every Wednesday during form time, these pupil volunteers meet with Year 7 pupils to support them with their reading. The weekly sessions are designed to build confidence, improve literacy skills and foster a love of reading in a friendly and supportive environment.

The mentors not only help with reading comprehension and fluency, but also act as positive role models, encouraging good study habits, resilience and communication skills. The relationships being built between older and younger pupils are a wonderful example of the strong community spirit we value at our school.

Ella Year 10 Mentor said: "I look forward to reading every Wednesday morning with my mentee in Year 7. She has progressed so much, it's made me proud because I was the one who helped her. Reading makes me feel like I'm in a different world and experiencing that with someone else is truly special. Hearing her clear reading and fluency improve makes me super proud of her. We talk after every chapter, imagining what it would be like if we were the characters in the book."

Muna Year 7 mentee said: "My mentor makes me think I'm in a dream of books and our friendship is so good. I do really know now that it is good for me. My mentor is an angel. She helps me whenever I'm stuck on something and helps me with anything she can. I think it is great being together to read, and I want to thank her for her help."

Jane Loughman, School Librarian said: "I'm thrilled to be part of the Peer Mentor Reading Programme for the second year now and it has become a highlight of my week. The enthusiasm of both the mentors and mentees is something for us to be proud of. The hum of the reading is quite an overwhelming experience in itself, not to mention how much the pupil's resilience, confidence and self-esteem is boosted along the way. It's a genuine joy to witness their reading journeys unfold in our beautiful Library."

A big thank you to our peer mentors for their commitment and care and to the staff who help co-ordinate this valuable programme.

Year 9 Pupils Explore Sustainability and Green Careers

Recently, 13 of our Year 9 pupils took part in an exciting Sustainability Careers Event hosted at the Mayfield redevelopment site and funded by Landsec, one of the UK’s leading property companies.

The event gave pupils the opportunity to take part in a range of workshops focused on sustainability and careers in the green sector. Highlights included conducting an ecological survey of Mayfield Park and working with professionals to design their own low-carbon community. Pupils researched, planned, and presented their ideas to experts, who gave valuable feedback on their work.

During the lesson, pupils worked through a range of key practical skills. They prepared and seasoned the lamb mince, shaped the koftas and ensured they were cooked thoroughly to a safe temperature of 75°C. They also made naan bread dough from scratch and created a refreshing tzatziki using fresh ingredients.

The session ended with a focus on presentation, with pupils proudly plating up their creations. The classroom was filled with wonderful aromas and lots of proud smiles!

Well done to all involved for your hard work and professionalism in the kitchen.
