Welcome from Co-op Academy North Manchester

As we approach the end of an exceptionally busy and productive autumn term, I want to take a moment to reflect on our successes over the last few weeks. It has been a season of hard work, enrichment and the Co-op Values in action…

Our Winter Concert on 10th December was a spectacular evening; it was a joy to see so many of you there to witness the musical talents of our pupils. The dedication shown by our Music department and the performers truly captured the festive mood.

Similarly, the energy surrounding our upcoming production of Oliver! Jr is building.  Rehearsals have been fantastic, with pupils performing a sneak preview and leading a ‘Food Glorious Food’ singalong in assemblies this week.  We cannot wait for you to see the final show in February and tickets have been released today and are now available to book here: Oliver Jr. Tickets

Last week marked a significant moment for our Year 11 pupils as they received their results from their first set of mock exams.  We are incredibly proud of the maturity and resilience shown on Mock Results Day - Year 11 pupils now know exactly what they need to work on and have 6 weeks until the spring mock exams to ready themselves to do even better next time around. Mock Results Day was followed by Progress Review Evening, and I want to thank Year 11 parents and carers for your attendance and continued partnership.

As we look ahead to January, we are excited to watch pupils’ Achievement Points turn into real rewards that they can redeem at our new Rewards Shop.  Mr Greenfield wrote to all parents and carers yesterday to share our new approach to rewarding and recognising pupils' achievements in a variety of exciting ways. The letter can be found here.

Please don’t forget, pupils will start to accrue Achievement Points from the very first day back after the break: Monday 5th January 2026.  In addition to being able to spend their points at the Rewards Shop, the Attendance Golden Tickets will start to build up from January to recognise excellent attendance to school and pupils will have the opportunity to win big prizes at the end of every half-term.  The first big prize will be the opportunity to win one of ten 40’’ flat screen TVs.  On the final day before February half-term there will be a prize draw to award two pupils from each year group with a brand new TV!  To maximise their chances of winning, pupils need to attend all day, every day and over the course of the 6 week half-term, pupils will accrue 6 Attendance Golden Tickets and 6 chances to win!

Every day in school counts and we look forward to welcoming every pupil back, ready to learn and to start the new year as we mean to go on in January.  The academy re-opens at 8am (breakfast) and the school day begins at 8:30am on Monday 5th January 2026 - in the meantime, I wish you all a peaceful, safe, and very happy festive break.

Best Wishes,

Mrs Sloper-Russell

Principal

Curriculum Corner – Geography

The Geography department at Co-op Academy North Manchester is thrilled with the brilliant start our pupils have made this year! From exploring our local community to understanding global superpowers, our pupils are developing crucial knowledge and geographical skills.

Key Stage 3 – Exploring Our World

Years 7 to 9 are focused on building a robust understanding of the geographical world and developing the skills needed for success in Key Stage 4 and beyond.

  • Year 7 have been actively investigating their local area, focusing heavily on map skills, essential for navigating and understanding places. This has led to an exploration of the geography of the UK and a thought-provoking project on submerged worlds: should we care? This topic introduced them to the complexities of ocean environments and climate change.

  • Year 8 went straight into the powerful forces, shaping our planet with tectonics. A significant focus has been placed on the Japan 2011 tsunami, allowing pupils to understand the real-world impact of tectonic hazards. They have also begun to investigate development, exploring the disparities between places globally.

  • Year 9 have been tackling major global issues. They are exploring the concept of global superpowers, analysing how influence and power shift across the globe. Alongside this, they are studying ecosystems, learning about the vital biomes on earth and the interconnectedness of life.

Key Stage 4 – Deepening Understanding and Exam Preparation

Key Stage 4 is all about applying foundational knowledge, mastering geographical concepts, and preparing effectively for GCSE.

  • Year 10 have made an excellent start to their GCSE course. They began with hazards, examining the causes and impacts of different natural events, before moving on to the dynamic topic of coasts. This work requires a strong grasp of physical processes and human management strategies.

  • Year 11 are in the final stretch of their GCSE journey. They have successfully completed the changing economic world unit, which covers key topics like industry, globalisation, and managing economic change. They've tackled their first set of Year 11 Mocks with commendable effort and are currently nearing completion of the living world unit (biomes and ecosystems), bringing their content coverage almost to an end with only one topic to go! The Geography team is now focused on supporting pupils in closing any identified knowledge gaps and refining their exam technique to ensure they achieve the best possible grades this summer!

Curriculum Corner – History

The History Department is delighted with the outstanding start our pupils have made this year. From investigating medieval power to analysing the causes and consequences of global conflict, our pupils are developing rich historical knowledge and strong analytical skills.

Key Stage 3 – Building Historical Understanding

Across Years 7–9, pupils are developing the core skills of historical enquiry: questioning, source analysis, explanation, and evaluating interpretations, all while exploring a broad and diverse past.

Year 7 began the year stepping into the world of Roman Britain, exploring the Roman conquest and the profound changes they brought to religion, culture, and society. Pupils have been learning how power was established, challenged, and controlled in the centuries following the arrival of the Romans. They have also developed confidence with fundamental skills such as chronology, cause and consequence, and analysing historical evidence.

Year 8 launched straight into the Early Modern period, examining the dramatic religious, political, and social changes that reshaped Britain and Europe. From the Reformation and the Tudors, to the age of exploration and the growth of empire, pupils have been investigating how new ideas, new powers, and expanding global connections transformed the world.

Year 9 have been tackling some of the most significant events of the modern era. They have explored the origins of the First World War, deepening their understanding of global alliances and the rise of tension across Europe. Alongside this, Year 9 pupils are studying the Holocaust through the lens of change, examining how the lives, rights, and experiences of Jewish people altered over time under Nazi rule. This unit helps pupils understand how discrimination escalated into persecution and genocide, while developing their ability to track continuity and change using historical evidence.

Key Stage 4 – Deepening Knowledge and Preparing for Exams

At GCSE, pupils apply their KS3 foundations to master complex historical concepts, refine their writing, and build the skills essential for success in AQA History.

Year 10 have made a strong start to their GCSE course. They began with their thematic study, Britain: Health and the People, before moving on to Norman England: Part 1 – the story of 1066. Pupils have examined the succession crisis following the death of Edward the Confessor, the rival claimants to the throne, and the key events of 1066, including Stamford Bridge and the Battle of Hastings. This unit develops pupils' understanding of causation, interpretation, and historical significance, all essential for GCSE success.

Year 11 are entering the final phase of their GCSE journey. They have completed Germany 1890–1945 and the Conflict and Tension depth study, gaining insight into diplomacy, dictatorship, war, and the fragile nature of international peace. After showing determination in their first set of mocks, pupils are now finalising their work on Norman England and focusing on targeted revision. The History team is supporting pupils in closing knowledge gaps, strengthening structure and analysis, and honing source and interpretation skills to ensure that they achieve their best possible grades this summer.

Co-op Academy North Manchester English Department recommends…

‘October, October’ by Katya Balen.

Katya Balen's October, October is a stunning and hugely enjoyable novel that deservedly won the Yoto Carnegie Medal. It's the story of eleven-year-old October, who lives a perfect, free life off-grid in the woods with her father. They are "wild"—knowing the language of the trees and the movements of the stars.

October’s life is turned upside down when her father has a terrible accident, forcing her to leave the only home she has ever known for the overwhelming, chaotic world of London to live with her estranged mother. As October struggles to adjust to this change and to protect her rescued baby owl, Stig, she finds herself making reckless decisions that put her and those she loves in danger.

This novel is a beautifully written story about finding courage and re-connecting with family. It is perfect for readers aged 12 and up and will deeply resonate with children who feel like outsiders, love nature, or who are struggling with change themselves. It assures them that true strength is found not in running away, but in carrying the "wild" spirit within.

From North Manchester to the South Pole: Our Flags Reach Antarctica!

We are thrilled to share an exciting update from our Geography department. Earlier this year, Year 7 pupils were challenged to design a flag for Antarctica as part of the UK Polar Network Antarctica Day.

After a difficult judging process, two winning designs by Adriano and Amina were selected to represent Co-op Academy North Manchester on the frozen continent.

Our flags travelled approximately 15,000km to reach Union Glacier Camp (79.7778°S, 83.3208°). They were carried by the REWIND ice core drilling team, a group of elite scientists working to recover some of the world's oldest ice. To put their work into perspective, teams involved in this mission have previously discovered ice estimated to be 6 million years old!

Connecting to the Classroom: The arrival of the flags couldn't be better timed. Our Year 7 pupils are currently exploring these very environments in their 'Submerged Worlds' topic. This unit examines the vital role of water across the globe, from the depths of the oceans to the frozen glaciers currently being studied by the REWIND team.

Find out more: You can read about the REWIND team’s mission and their work on climate dynamics here.

Well done to Adriano and Amina for seeing their artwork make it all the way to the bottom of the world!

Our pupils performed a vibrant selection of seasonal favourites, ranging from the peaceful 'Silent Night' to high-energy classics like 'Rocking Around the Christmas Tree', Shakin' Stevens' 'Merry Christmas Everyone' and the Slade anthem 'Merry Xmas Everybody'. The residents were also treated to a sneak peek of two special items from our Winter Concert: a moving rendition of 'Somewhere Only We Know' and the heartfelt 'In the Stars'.

The visit concluded with a rousing chorus of 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas', leaving everyone in high spirits. We are incredibly proud of our choir for their hard work and for representing the school so beautifully through their music and kindness.
