As the academic year continues its rapid pace, I am delighted to share a round-up of the numerous successes, initiatives, and the sustained dedication shown by our pupils and staff over the last few weeks. This period has been characterised by a focus on mock exams for Year 11, real-world learning for all year groups, and a commitment to our community values. When I visit lessons, pupils are engaged and there is an atmosphere of mutual trust that is second to none…

Congratulations to Year 11, who have risen to the challenge in their first set of mock exams – a big milestone in their final year. Thank you for supporting your child and for attending our Year 11 Launch Evening at the start of the month; we hope that the resources and exam information provided helped you to sustain your child throughout the past fortnight.  Whilst we are busy marking papers in anticipation of Mock Results Day on 11th December, I want to recognise the incredible efforts of our Year 11, which included over 150 pupils attending revision sessions daily.

Year 11 have shown commendable effort and attending revision demonstrates a clear desire to succeed.  Coinciding with Mock Results Day – the Year 11 Progress Review Evening is also on the 11th December between 15:30-18:30 - appointments will be available to book via the Arbor App. This evening will be vital to discuss your child’s progress in person before the next set of mock exams starting in just 10 school weeks' time.  Starting on 23rd February until 13th March, the second set of mock exams are after February half-term – the year is moving quickly and working together is vital to support your child in achieving their potential.

Our collective goal is to ensure that every pupil achieves GCSE grades that they can be proud of in the summer and this week, we are looking forward to welcoming back our record-breaking 2025 Year 11 leavers and their families to receive their GCSE Certificates and a range of awards in recognition of their time at Co-op Academy North Manchester.

The past few weeks have also been busy with lots of enrichment and extra-curricular opportunities. Our Year 10 pupils visited Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics where pupils toured the cutting-edge facility and engaged directly with academics – read more below.  Now to literature, congratulations to our ‘Shadows’ poetry winners and, on the field, our Year 7 boys' football team, who competed in a Manchester United Foundation Tournament against eight other partner schools on Friday 14th November and won!

This year’s academy production of Oliver! Jr. is also progressing brilliantly with rehearsals well underway and gathering momentum as we approach Christmas promising an exciting end to the next half-term.  Tickets will go on sale after Christmas for show week, which will be during the week beginning 9th February 2026 – as always, please follow our social media channels for updates and important reminders: @coopnorthmcr on Instagram and @coopacademynm on Facebook.

Prior to Christmas, the Music Department will also host our annual Winter Celebration Concert on 10th December 5:30pm - 7:15pm. Tickets are available to book here:  https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/co-op-academy-north-manchester

We are now focused on maintaining this phenomenal momentum as we head towards the festive period – please remember, despite the cold-season, attendance at school is vital and pupils will only achieve by being here, on time and ready to learn, and we will continue to do everything that we can to support them.  For any direct queries, please email: noma-enquiries@coopacademies.co.uk.

Best Wishes,

Mrs Sloper-Russell

Maths Spotlight

A fantastic start to the year for Maths at Co-op Academy North Manchester!

Our pupils have had a brilliant start to the year across the Maths department, with trips, outstanding home learning and of course many fantastic lessons.

Key Stage 3 – Building the Foundations

Years 7 to 9 are very much about strengthening the foundations of pupils’ mathematical understanding that we rely on into Key Stage 4 and beyond.

  • Year 7 have been reviewing and critiquing their learning from Primary School to work on ensuring that pupils understand the why and how of some key mathematical ideas that they have learnt so far.

  • Year 8 have been in the depths of Algebra through working on equations, inequalities and linear graphs – key ideas that continue to be important across their time at school.

  • Year 9 have spent time exploring probability as well as building on equations work from Year 8 by introducing the idea of simultaneous equations – why solve one equation when you can solve two at once?

Key Stage 4 – Furthering Knowledge

Year 10 have made a fantastic start to Key Stage 4 and continue to demonstrate a brilliant understanding of the foundational knowledge explored in Key Stage 3. We’re really excited in the department to see this hard work continue and discover how far our pupils can go!

Year 11 are deep in preparations for their GCSEs, with pupils just having completed their first set of Year 11 Mocks. Pupils have engaged with support and have shown that they want to do well – we had over 100 attending Mock Paper 2 revision this week! The next steps will be to continue this work, supported by the Maths team, as we’ve identified what pupils do and don’t know - now it’s all about closing gaps in knowledge so that pupils can be proud of the GCSE grades that they achieve in summer!

Our Year 7 pupils attended a special assembly dedicated to honouring this annual event, led by our Head of History, Mr. Charlton. Mr. Charlton spoke compellingly on the importance of Remembrance, ensuring our youngest pupils understood the sacrifices made and the reasons we continue to remember today.

A particularly engaging moment of the assembly was the reading of an excerpt from 'Adventures in Time, the First World War' by Dominic Sandbrook, which brought a historical perspective to life for the pupils.

The assembly concluded with the entire academy respectfully observing the two minutes' silence, a moment for quiet reflection and remembrance.

Co-op Academy North Manchester English Department Recommends…

We value and promote reading, with Christmas on the horizon. Here’s some inspiration for a winter read:

‘Odd Girl Out’ by Tasneem Abdur-Rashi

Tasneem Abdur-Rashid’s ‘Odd Girl Out’ is a wonderfully insightful and resonant novel that delves into the complexities of teenage identity, friendship, and faith. The story centres on Rayhanah, a British Muslim girl who must navigate the often-conflicting worlds of her traditional home life and the modern, demanding social landscape of high school.

When a secret she shares with her best friend, Sarah, threatens to unravel everything, Rayhanah is forced to confront tough questions about loyalty, honesty, and who she truly wants to be. Abdur-Rashid handles themes of friendship, loyalty and self-acceptance with grace and authenticity, making Rayhanah’s struggle eminently relatable.

This captivating narrative is aimed at readers aged 12 to 16 and offers valuable perspectives on being yourself in a world that pressures you to conform. Its timely and moving message has earned it a well-deserved nomination for this year's prestigious Carnegie Medal for Children's Literature. A must-read for young adults looking for stories that reflect their world with humour and heart.

It's Road Safety Week: Small Actions, Big Difference! As the days get shorter, visibility is everything. Whether you walk, cycle or drive, your actions save lives. Let's make every journey safer this winter. Here's how to play your part: Be Seen: Wear bright/reflective gear. Drivers, keep your headlights clean and on! Slow Down: Darker evenings mean less reaction time. Lower speeds are safer speeds. Stay Alert: Ditch the phone and distractions. Focus is crucial when hazards are masked by darkness.Respect Crossings: Pedestrians, use designated crossings. Drivers, be prepared to stop and look multiple times before proceeding. Protect the Vulnerable: Take extra care near schools, bus stops, and residential zones.Let's commit to safety this week and all winter long#RoadSafetyWeek #BeSafe #SaferJourneys #ShowYouCare
