Now that the new academic year is well underway, I want to start by saying thank you for your support with the new uniform expectations. Pupils are looking smarter than ever and following the launch of our new behaviour policy, standards across the academy are significantly improved, with pupils exhibiting exemplary conduct and representing the academy with pride in the community.

To our new parents and carers, welcome, and I hope that you enjoy reading our newsletter.  In addition to NOMA News, we also share key updates and news via social media. Our Co-op Academy North Manchester Instagram account, @coopnorthmcr, is a great way to receive positive messages and important reminders, in addition to our Facebook page: @coopacademynm. For any direct queries, please use noma-enquiries@coopacademies.co.uk and we aim to respond within 48 hours.

Whilst keeping you updated with events across the academy, NOMA News showcases departments to give you an insight into the curricula studied and, as an English teacher myself, it was only right to start with the English department this week and to share this picture of our wonderful library.  The library is open Monday to Thursday before school, during break and lunch and after school. On Fridays, it is open at break and lunchtime only and Mrs Loughman our librarian, is an expert on literature for all age groups.

Our new Year 7s have now settled in and know their way around and our new Year 11s have diligently started to attend revision, and they will receive their personalised revision offer during Personal Development time imminently; following a record-breaking set of results last August, Year 11 are showing that they mean business from the outset, and we are here to support them every step of the way in this most important of years.

We are also preparing for the future with Open Evening coming up on Thursday 2nd October when we will welcome prospective Y5 and Y6 pupils to visit the academy when I will be giving an address, and you can sign up for a tour of our fantastic facilities here: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/co-op-academy-north-manchester.  A reminder to our current pupils that the academy closes for Open Evening at 12.30pm on Thursday 2nd October and the buses will be running their usual services at this earlier time.

Have a great week,

Best wishes

Mrs Sloper-Russell

A Glimpse into the English Department at Co-op Academy North Manchester

To be or not to be... excited for the new school year? That is the question, and the answer is yes! The English Department at Co-op Academy North Manchester has had a busy and productive start to the new academic year as pupils across all year groups have begun working with a variety of exciting and diverse texts and topics. We are incredibly proud of the fantastic start our pupils have made, and it's been wonderful to see so many of them settling into their studies with enthusiasm and hard work. Here's a look at what each year group has been getting up to.

Key Stage 3: Starting Strong

It's been a great start for Year 7, who have settled in brilliantly and are already getting to grips with new ideas and concepts in English. They recently celebrated Roald Dahl Day by doing some fantastic work on the beloved author. Soon, they will be developing their creative writing skills, drawing inspiration from extracts of gothic literature.

Meanwhile, Year 8 students are engrossed in their reading of ‘The Edge’ by Alan Gibbons, a gripping novel that explores themes of escape and resilience. The students are analysing the characters and plot, preparing them for more complex literary analysis in the future.

In Year 9, the atmosphere is one of suspense as pupils delve into a collection of spooky gothic short stories. They are studying classics like "The Monkey's Paw" and "The Tell-Tale Heart," learning to analyse how authors create fear and tension through language and structure.

Key Stage 4: GCSE Preparation and Hard Work

Our Year 10 pupils have made an excellent start to their GCSE courses. They're kicking off their English Literature studies with poetry, exploring different forms and themes as they build the foundational knowledge needed for their exams.

Last, but certainly not least, Year 11 pupils are in their final year and are tackling their last new content before the preparation for mock exams begins. They are studying the famous Victorian novella, "Jekyll and Hyde", a text that challenges them to analyse complex themes of good versus evil and the duality of human nature. This final push will set them up for success as they prepare for the upcoming mock examinations.

We Recommend Reading

As we begin the new academic year, it feels like the perfect time to encourage all our pupils to read widely and for pleasure at home. While school plays a vital role in developing literacy skills, creating a love for reading at home can have a profound impact on their academic and personal growth.

Encouraging your child to pick up a book for enjoyment boosts their vocabulary, improves their writing skills, and strengthens their comprehension. Beyond the classroom, it nurtures empathy as they step into the lives of different characters and experience new worlds. It also sparks creativity and critical thinking, helping them to better understand and navigate the world around them.

Setting aside 15-20 minutes each day for shared reading or quiet reading time can make all the difference. Let your child choose books they are genuinely excited about, whether it's fiction, non-fiction, comics, or magazines. By making reading a regular, enjoyable part of your family's routine, you are helping to build a foundation for lifelong learning and success. Further information about the benefits of reading for children and the National Year of Reading 2026 can be found here.

The story begins when a boy named Christopher discovers a griffin, leading him to the Archipelago, a hidden network of islands that serves as a sanctuary for creatures we only thought existed in stories.

At its heart, this book is a thrilling adventure centered around Christopher's friendship with a girl named Mal, as they embark on a quest to save the Archipelago from a creeping darkness. The novel is a beautiful testament to the power of imagination and the importance of protecting wonder in our world. It's a captivating read that will leave young readers spellbound from beginning to end.
