Celebrating Co-op Academy North Manchester’s Rich Diversity
Our academy community rests on a simple but unshakeable principle: that inclusion and diversity make us stronger. On Thursday, 16th July our vibrant community lit up the academy grounds as we hosted our annual Diversity Day; a joyful celebration of inclusivity, heritage and diversity. It’s the people and their multitude of backgrounds that make Co-op Academy North Manchester a truly special place to learn and to grow.
From first bell to last, the atmosphere was one of warmth and celebration. The corridors were filled with flags and tapestries, and pupils were invited to attend the school day in elements of cultural dress. A stunning variety of colours, textiles, patterns, and symbols showed what a diverse community we host.
Talent Pays No Mind to Borders
At the heart of it all were our Diversity Day celebration performances. Our performers kept the energy up all day as they danced, rhymed, sang, and waved their flags in the name of diversity for each year group.
Performances included poetry, traditional and contemporary dances, cheerleading, and high-energy singalongs that got the whole auditorium joining in. Matilda was even brave enough to tackle a dance routine alone, before bringing the rest of the performers back on to the stage for Madonna’s iconic “Get Into the Groove”.
Powerful Voices
We were deeply moved by both the original, spoken-word performances we were treated to. Kayne delivered a moving, contemplative poem that captured the “why” of Diversity Day perfectly:
"Across every classroom and down every row,
We bring different histories, talents and names.
It's the spark of our differences, helping us grow,
For a fire is dull when each flame is the same."
Then there was Prince’s powerful storytelling. Prince’s message was undeniable, and his slam poetry was both lyrical and poignant. He addressed historical injustice on the way to a final call for the kind of unity that only a celebration of diversity can bring:
"I can name times like this,
Like when South Asia was invaded and it had people moving skittish,
I mean raise your hand if you thought a chicken tikka masala was actually British,
Like did George Floyd have to die to show Black Lives Matter?
Why did they get triggered just because they saw a black man dressed dapper?
There's many views on many views even I have my views too,
But you know what's true?
The fact that if we embrace each other we could do things we didn't even know we could do."
Inclusivity is What Makes Succeeding Together Possible
When the lunchtime bell rang, the excitement continued. Across the academy, teachers treated pupils to activities from all corners of the globe. pupils had fun with:
- A saree-draping class, where pupils laughed and learned together as they mastered the elegant folds of the traditional South Asian garment.
- A Greek bracelet-making class, where pupils learned traditional weaving techniques to craft beautiful, symbolic talisman.
- A Sevillanas dance class, where pupils and staff alike were guided through the passionate, rhythmic steps of the classic Andalusian folk dance.
- An anthemic courtyard sing-and-dance-along to "La Macarena" and "Wonderwall"!
A massive thank you to all the performers, the staff who helped coordinate the day, and every single pupil who wore their heritage with pride. It really was an unforgettable day at Co-op Academy North Manchester!
Naturally, emotions ran high. There were big hugs, proud smiles, and more than a few happy tears shed by pupils and teachers alike as staff got stuck into signing shirts and sharing final goodbyes.
stadium's premier suites. The atmosphere was joyful, filled with laughter, shared memories, and a tangible sense of relief now that exam season was officially behind them and the longest summer of their lives lay ahead. 
This week, our pupils attended a powerful and hard-hitting performance of BLUNT, a production that tackles the realities of youth gang culture and knife crime.
These highly anticipated trips were earned by pupils who showed absolute dedication to their academy; pupils who achieved outstanding attendance and zero negative behavior points earned their places. Showing up every single day with a positive, co-operative attitude is no small feat, and these trips were our way of saying a thank you for setting such an incredible example for the rest of our academy community.
