Welcome from Co-op Academy North Manchester

The sun is shining on Co-op Academy North Manchester as we prepare to finish half-term five and head into the final half of the summer term. Positive stories all around in this edition of NOMA News as we celebrate the achievements of our pupils and look forward to the final stretch of a successful academic year.

First of all, we must celebrate the hard work and dedication that we’ve seen from our Year 11 cohort so far this GCSE season. We’re at the half-way point in the exam period, and we hope our Year 11s will decompress over half-term and use the time to revise effectively. A reminder to Year 11: once it’s over, you’ll have the longest break of your academic careers, so take advantage of all the time and opportunities for revision that you have available until then! Half-term and Saturday revision schedules have been published.

Strong communication and strong partnerships between our staff and parents/carers are essential to this academy’s continued success. I’d like to thank everyone who provided feedback in our latest Edurio survey. The feedback helps us to understand your needs better, and how to continue to improve our academy. Your insights are invaluable and will shape our community moving forward.  Read more about what you asked for, and what we are doing about it in the newsletter below.

We’ve been given so many good news stories and things to celebrate since our last NOMA News, that it’s hard to know where to start, but congratulations in particular go to our English department’s very own Filip, who brought our academy into the national literary spotlight. Filip won Third place in First Story’s 100-word story competition. Well done Filip!

In heartwarming rewards news, Year 7 pupil Adriano showed incredible generosity by saving up his hard-earned achievement points. Instead of spending them on himself, he used his rewards to buy a Barbie doll for his sister’s fifth birthday. His selfless gesture brought joy to his family and made us very proud.

Our Year 7s also had some great news to share courtesy of a partnership between ourselves, Co-op Academy Manchester (CAM) and the Giant’s Seat Garden Centre in Radcliffe. Year 7 have got off to a great start with our brand new Gardening Club, thanks to advice from CAM’s eco-ambassador and a generous donation from Giant’s Seat supporting our 7s to learn about the benefits that being out in nature can bring.

Speaking of being out in nature; I'm sure everyone’s looking forward to having some fun in the sun this half-term break, but some cautionary advice. While pupils will be eager to get out and enjoy the sunshine, it’s important to take precautions. Staying hydrated is key, as well as protecting skin with plenty of sun cream. See the summer safety poster below, or click the following link for more information on keeping safe in the sun:

We’ve got just one more half-term until the summer break begins. Let’s all keep our attendance up, and make the most of all the remaining precious learning hours. Have a great half-term, and we’re looking forward to welcoming all pupils back to school on Monday 1st June at 8.30am.

Best wishes,
Mrs Sloper-Russell
Principal

Co-op Academy North Manchester English Department recommends…

‘We Were Liars’ by E Lockhart

If your teen is looking for a gripping, atmospheric mystery that will keep the pages turning over half-term, E. Lockhart’s We Were Liars is a must-read.

Set on a private island off the coast of Massachusetts, the story follows Cadence Sinclair Eastman, the eldest grandchild of a wealthy, seemingly perfect family. After a mysterious accident during her fifteenth summer leaves her with amnesia and debilitating migraines, Cadence returns to the island two years later to piece together the truth of what actually happened.

The novel is beautifully written, filled with sharp social commentary, family drama, and an underlying tension that builds to a stunning, unforgettable plot twist. The complex themes, emotional intensity, and sophisticated storytelling make it perfect for older readers and mature young adults who love a good mystery.

What’s more, this modern young adult classic has been adapted into a highly anticipated Netflix series, making it the perfect time for your teen to experience the original story before watching it unfold on screen. Highly recommended for ages 14 and up.

¡Hola! and Bonjour!
Meet the Team: Our department is led by Ms. Bauer, our Head of Department and a native French speaker. We were thrilled to welcome Miss Ruiz Marmol, a native Spanish speaker, to the team in September. We also have Miss Mistry, who is doing a fantastic job successfully completing her ECT induction. Furthermore, we are supported by Ms. Tomkow, Assistant Vice Principal for Teaching and Learning, who brings her expertise to both our Y9 French and KS4 Spanish classrooms.

Key Stage 3: Building Confidence with Language

This year, we have introduced Sentence Builders across all year groups. This new approach has significantly boosted pupil engagement and allowed pupils to produce high-quality language right from the start of September. It’s been wonderful to see so many pupils settling into their studies with such enthusiasm!

See below some examples of incredible KS3 work in Spanish and French

Year 7: Our youngest linguists have made a brilliant start studying Spanish. They are using sentence builders to describe themselves and their lives with growing confidence.

Year 8: Pupils in Year 8 are continuing their journey in Spanish, building on their prior knowledge to tackle more complex descriptions of free time activities, social media and opinions.

Year 9: This year, Year 9 have made the exciting transition to studying French, mastering pronunciation and syntax as they prepare for the options process.

Digital Learning: Don't forget that pupils can also complete extra homework tasks online on sentencebuilders.com to reinforce their learning and earn extra points!

Key Stage 4: Navigating the New GCSE

It is a landmark year for our Key Stage 4 pupils as we navigate significant changes to the national curriculum.

Year 11: The Trailblazers

Our Year 11 pupils have the distinction of being the first year group to complete the new MFL GCSE specification. This is a brand-new challenge, and we are incredibly proud to announce that they have just successfully completed their speaking exams! This exam counts for 25% of their final grade and Ms Bauer and Ms Tomkow were incredibly proud of their outcomes.

Year 10: The Rising Stars
We also have a very strong Year 10 cohort who will be the second group to tackle this new curriculum. They are already getting to grips with the completely new exam style and showing great promise.

Expert Guidance: Change can be daunting, but please rest assured—all of our staff are fully trained by AQA on this new specification. We are experts in these new requirements and are fully equipped to guide our pupils to success!

Beyond the Classroom: MFL Extra-Curricular

We believe language learning should be fun and immersive! We are delighted to offer a range of clubs to get pupils involved in culture and communication outside of their usual lessons:

Spanish for Beginners:

Monday Lunchtime (Perfect for those wanting a head start or a new challenge!)

Salsa Club: Tuesday After School with Miss Ruiz Marmol (Get moving and learn the rhythms of the Spanish-speaking world!)

Film Club: Wednesday Lunchtime with Miss Mistry (Grab your popcorn and enjoy cinema from around the globe!)

Reading: Why not try reading Le Petit Prince? It is a very famous but simple French story that gives a wonderful observation of human life. You may remember your MFL teachers dressing up as the characters for our recent World Book Day!

Recommendations for Success!

As we move through the academic year, we want to encourage all our pupils to engage with languages at home. Developing a "little and often" habit with language learning can have a profound impact on fluency and memory.

The MFL Department recommends...

Vocabulary Apps: Great for a quick daily blast of practice.

Teach a family member: Take home your revision pack of sentence builders and try teaching someone at home 10 words from it!

Change the Subtitles: Try watching a favourite familiar movie with Spanish or French audio or subtitles.

Cultural Exploration: Try following a simple recipe for Crêpes or Tortilla written in the target language!

By making language a regular part of your routine, you are helping to build a foundation for lifelong communication skills. We look forward to seeing our linguists continue to flourish!

Year 9’s Filip Comes Third in National 100-word Story Competition

We’re thrilled to share some incredible literary news from our English department. Co-op Academy North Manchester’s very own Filip took 3rd place in First Story’s prestigious 100-word story competition! To put Filip’s achievement into perspective, First Story receives thousands of entries from schools across the entire country. Fierce competition indeed!

To stand out in such a crowded field of young writers is a phenomenal achievement. You could say that Filip’s brought the Co-op Academy North Manchester English Department into the national literary spotlight.

The Judge’s Take

First Story’s panel of professional authors and editors had this to say about Filip’s unique voice:

“This story shone through its lovely execution of concept. It captured a real sense of how the car was feeling, and married strong scene-setting with lush, evocative language. This was one that really grew on us.”

Judge for yourself below:

Short Fiction, Big Impact

Writing a novel is hard, but many writers find that writing short fiction is even harder. French mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal said: "I would have written a shorter letter, but I did not have the time." Brevity is a sometimes underrated quality in good writing, and achieving the desired result with fewer words often takes more time and effort than a long, rambling piece would.

Filip’s prose is evocative and economical. It’s a sign that we have a very bright creative imagination in our midst. Filip imbues the car with a sense of lonely melancholy, personifying the car so readers can engage with empathy. To craft a narrative that resonates emotionally while sticking to a rigid word count requires a deep understanding of rhythm, vocabulary and shows emotional maturity.

Did you know that the 100-word story is known as a “drabble”, and is a precise literary form in its own right? The drabble originated in the 1980s as a world-building exercise among science-fiction writers, who aimed to evoke entire worlds in as few words as possible. In this case, Filip managed to achieve in just 100 words what many professional authors struggle to do with 100,000!

Important Information for all Families who Rent

The Renters' Rights Act came into effect across England on Friday, 1st May 2026. The Act introduced major changes to renter’s rights with the goal of making renting more secure and fairer for families.

If you rent your home, these new legal protections will affect you, and these changes will quite likely be a benefit.

Key changes include:

  • No More ‘No Fault’ Evictions: Section 21 evictions are banned. Landlords can no longer ask you to leave without a specific, legally valid reason.
  • Flexible, Rolling Tenancies: Fixed-term tenancies have ended. Your tenancy will roll automatically until you choose to leave (giving two months' notice) or your landlord has valid legal grounds to end it.
  • Protection Against Discrimination: It is now illegal for landlords to turn you away simply because you have children or receive benefits.
  • Fairer Costs: Rental bidding wars are banned. Upfront rent is capped at one month, and rent increases are limited to once per year.
  • Rights for Pet Owners: You now have the right to request a pet, which landlords cannot unreasonably refuse.

Wellbeing Meets Action: Our Mental Health Awareness Week

Improving mental health is more than just a conversation, it’s an activity.

At our academy, we believe that supporting mental health must go beyond discussion; it requires active, meaningful engagement. This past week, we came together to participate in a series of events designed to promote wellbeing, reduce stress, and foster a supportive environment for pupils and staff.

In alignment with the vital work of the Mental Health Foundation, our focus this week was on the practical steps we can take every day to protect our mental wellbeing. For our staff, this included a dedicated wellbeing walk along the Longdendale Trail, offering a much-needed opportunity to disconnect from the busy school environment, connect with colleagues, and experience the benefits of spending time in nature. It was soggy, but good for the soul.

In the academy, pupils participated in a diverse range of activities. For those looking to have fun and express themselves, we hosted two well-attended karaoke and salsa dancing sessions. For those after a moment of quiet reflection, we provided hands-on creative outlets, including air-dry clay workshops, mindful colouring, and our popular Reading Rocks sessions. These activities offered pupils a safe space to practice mindfulness, decompress, and live in the present moment.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the Mental Health Foundation for their ongoing guidance and resources, which help organisations like ours ground these initiatives in practices that are proven to work.

Most importantly, we want to thank the staff and pupils who took action; participating in and organising events, and supporting one another throughout the week. While Mental Health Awareness Week is over, our commitment to embedding mental health and wellbeing into the fabric of our daily academy life remains a permanent priority.

Green Thumbs and Big Ambitions: Year 7 Launch Gardening Club

This half-term marked the inaugural meeting of our brand-new Year 7 Gardening Club, and our green-fingered year 7s have hit the ground running!

To help give our young gardeners the best possible start, we teamed up with Co-op Academy Manchester to bring in a professional advisor.

Their experienced Science Technician and Climate Ambassador spent time sharing his expertise with the group. Not only was he an absolute joy to work with, but he also generously supplied a variety of free herbs, which the pupils will plant in the coming weeks.

Inspired by the guest's advice, our Year 7s put their heads together to dream up some ambitious plans for the future of our school grounds.

Their wishlist for the Year 7 garden area includes:

  • Installing a beautiful archway and a garden swing.
  • Reviving the school pond.
  • Creating a haven for wildlife with insect hotels, bee posts, and bird boxes.
  • Adding a garden shed and a proper potting shed.
  • Growing vibrant sunflowers and flowers from seed.
  • Lending their hands to take care of wider school grounds and supporting the renovation of our Memorial Garden.

It’s inspiring to see how much this group has achieved so far. Their enthusiasm is catching on! We also want to extend a massive thank you to Giantsseat Garden Centre in Radcliffe. Their generous donation of strawberry plants, flowers, and seeds has given our pupils the perfect foundation to start digging in.

We are so proud of our Year 7s for the teamwork and vision on display here. We can’t wait to watch both the pupils and the garden grow! 🍓🌻

Rewards Update: We’re in the Manchester Evening News!

At the end of Half Term, we always reflect on our biggest achievers; what they’ve achieved and what they’ve earned.

The buzz around rewards continues to grow as we stock more and more exciting items for our pupils to buy every Friday.

Thanks to a very generous donation from Panini, many of our pupils were thrilled to get their hands on official football sticker books and sticker packs. These proved to be a huge hit across the year groups! And that’s not all; the usual line-up is still flying off the shelves. Pupils are using achievement points to buy themselves footballs, headphones, cosy blankets, alarm clocks, cuddly toys, and more!

A special mention to our Year 11 pupils, now at the half-way point in the GCSE exam season, who enjoyed hard-earned Friday treats using their tokens to buy chippy teas from the beloved Harry’s Chippy. It was a fantastic way to reward their dedication during a demanding chapter in their academic careers.

We’re incredibly proud of the pupils who put in the hard work every day, with outstanding attendance, attainment and behaviour. The press are taking note too, as an article in the MEN has applauded several Co-op Academies for using rewards systems to recognise excellent attendance. Co-op Academy North Manchester included!
