As the leaves turn and the nights draw in, the year is flying by and I want to share some of our latest highlights and updates with you.  It’s been a really strong start to 2025-2026 with last year’s record-breaking Year 11 results, pupils looking smarter than ever and demonstrating superb behaviour in lessons and around the academy.  When I visit lessons, pupils are engaged in an atmosphere of scholarly enquiry and mutual trust.

Firstly, I’d like to applaud our Year 11 pupils who have started the year with real purpose by attending lunchtime and after-school revision diligently and working hard to prepare for their first set of upcoming mock exams which start on Tuesday 11th November.  It is vitally important that Year 11 prepare thoroughly for their mocks so that we can provide the focussed feedback needed to realise their full potential in their final examinations in the summer term.  The Year 11 autumn mock series runs until Tuesday 25th November and as always, 100% effort and attendance is vital.

Alongside working hard towards their mock exams, all Key Stage 4 pupils have been considering their futures this week at our annual Careers Fair where colleges and employers met individually with pupils to discuss future education, training and employment options available. We continue to offer an excellent careers education and guidance having also received the national Quality in Careers Standard Award in the summer term.

To support our Year 11 in every way that we can, we're also delighted to invite our Year 11 parents, carers and pupils to a Year 11 Information Evening on Tuesday 4th November 5:30pm-6:30pm where we will provide essential guidance on how to best support your child at home as they manage their revision workload, establish effective revision habits and prepare for their final examinations in the summer term.  We will provide practical support including revision materials, equipment, and a breakdown of Year 11’s personalised revision and intervention timetables so that we are working closely together to ensure that your child achieves the best possible exam results.  If you haven’t already, please sign up to attend here: Co-op Academy North Manchester Y11 Information Evening

Now to some highlights, congratulations to the 420 individual pupils who were rewarded for their outstanding behaviour and attendance across this half-term.  This week each year group recognised pupils’ individual achievements through rewards’ assemblies and on the last day of this half-term pupils were invited to year-group celebratory events to say a big well done!

This half-term we also hosted our Open Evening for prospective Year 5 and Year 6 pupils where we proudly showcased our academy and the evening was vibrant with future pupils, parents and carers.  Thank you for supporting the evening and to all of our pupil helpers; a reminder that the deadline to apply for a place for new Year 7s starting in September 2026 is next Friday 31st October. Admissions are managed by the local authority and we are currently over-subscribed so we strongly advise putting Co-op Academy North Manchester as first choice on the form.

As always, we aim to keep you fully informed. A reminder that our Co-op Academy North Manchester Instagram account, @coopnorthmcr, is a great way to receive positive messages and important reminders, in addition to our Facebook page, @coopacademynm. For any direct queries, please continue to use noma-enquiries@coopacademies.co.uk.

There are lots of exciting opportunities planned for the next half-term, not to mention our production Oliver! Jr. - the cast has now been chosen and rehearsals are underway! Please note that there is a staff training day coming up and the academy will be closed to all pupils on Monday 10th of November 2025, reopening as usual on Tuesday 11th November.  In the meantime, have a wonderful half-term break and we will welcome all pupils back to the academy on Monday 3rd November at 8:30am.

Best Wishes

Mrs Sloper-Russell

Science Spotlight: Off to a Strong Start!

It’s been an exciting start to the year in Science, with pupils across all key stages diving into hands-on learning and scientific discovery.

Key Stage 3 pupils have shown incredible curiosity and creativity.

  • Year 7 blasted off during Space Week, completing their 'Mission to Mars' by designing and testing their own rockets, a fantastic way to develop scientific thinking and teamwork.

  • Year 8 have been exploring the wonders of the human body, focusing on how our skeleton supports us and the vital role the circulatory system plays in keeping us alive and healthy.

  • Year 9 have kicked off by sharpening their analytical minds, designing and analysing catapults while also investigating how diseases spread, their causes, and treatments for various outbreaks.

Key Stage 4 pupils are also building strong scientific connections.

  • Year 10 have begun their GCSE journey with enthusiasm, focusing on developing their practical and problem-solving skills. From investigating nuclear radiation to exploring the structure of the atom, they are laying the foundations for future success in Science.

Year 11 have jumped straight into revising chemical reactions and the forces that shape our world. They’ve been working hard with Oxford Revise books and flashcards to prepare for success in their upcoming exams. We wish them all the best of luck for their upcoming GCSE mock exams.

STEM Club!

This half-term, our STEM Club has been exploring a range of exciting hands-on projects that bring Science to life.

Pupils have created their own lava lamps to investigate density and immiscible liquids, dissected rats to study anatomy and organ systems, and built simple electrical circuits to understand current flow. To celebrate Space Week, we explored the night sky using Stellarium - an interactive online sky map - and discovered the myths behind famous constellations such as Ursa Major, Cassiopeia, and Andromeda. Pupils loved seeing the live star map and learning how to use it for real stargazing at home.

Next half-term, we’ll continue building on this curiosity with more creative experiments and challenges. Planned activities include making Elephant’s Toothpaste to explore chemical reactions, creating colourful patterns through Chromatography Art, experimenting with invisible ink and secret messages, and finishing the term with a fun STEM Escape Room to test problem-solving and teamwork skills.

This library is built on a simple idea: that a great book should always be within reach. We hope you'll use it, share it, and help us make it a thriving part of the Co-op Academy North Manchester experience. Happy reading!

‘Fright Bite’ by Jennifer Killick

Jennifer Killick’s new book is perfect for the spooky season! Set in an American Summer Camp this story is a glorious, fast-paced mash-up of genuine scares, gross-out moments, and laugh-out-loud humor.

The story centers on a group of mismatched kids, a reluctant crew known as the 'Losers' Club', who are sent to the unsettlingly named Fright Bite Camp. From the moment they arrive, the atmosphere is strangely wrong: the counsellors are too keen, the activities are bizarre, and a low-level dread hangs over the woodland setting.

Each character is really relatable. There is snappy dialogue and genuine friendships which ensure the reader is invested in the characters’ survival even when things get truly weird. This tight-knit group must uncover the horrifying secret of Fright Bite Camp, which makes the book a non-stop page-turner.

Killick manages the suspense perfectly, dropping tantalizing hints and keeping the pace snappy as the children uncover clues and confront their fears. The final chapters deliver a thrilling and perfectly satisfying conclusion to their wild ride. If you love stories where friendship battles the strange and wonderful, and you don’t mind a few jump scares, ‘Fright Bite’ is an essential read that will leave you giggling nervously.
