The National Holocaust Museum Visits Co-op Academy North Manchester for Special Workshops and Survivor Talk
On Tuesday, January 21st, Co-op Academy North had the privilege of welcoming The National Holocaust Museum for a profound day of education and remembrance. Year 9 pupils, along with selected Year 10 and 11 GCSE pupils, participated in insightful workshops and had the rare opportunity to hear a moving testimony from Holocaust survivor Martin Stern. The day offered an impactful and thought-provoking experience for all involved.
A Day of Learning
The day commenced with an interactive workshop for our pupils, delivered by representatives from The National Holocaust Museum. This session provided pupils with a deeper understanding of the Holocaust, its historical significance, and its enduring relevance today.
The highlight of the event was an emotional and inspiring talk from Holocaust survivor Martin Stern, who shared his personal experiences and reflections. His testimony offered pupils an invaluable and first hand perspective on one of history's darkest chapters.
A Memorable Experience
Reflecting on the day, Mr. Cooper, Joint Head of Personal Development, remarked, "We hope all pupils and staff involved in the day found the sessions insightful and meaningful."
Representatives from The National Holocaust Museum also praised the pupils, stating, "The pupils at Co-op Academy North truly impressed our educators at The National Holocaust Museum. They engaged in the workshops with enthusiasm and demonstrated a real understanding of the importance of learning about this history. We explored the rise of discrimination against Jewish communities in Europe and discussed how ordinary people can become perpetrators of such horrific events. The students' maturity and respect for the subject matter were truly commendable."
Year 10 pupil Ollie shared his thoughts on the experience, saying, "The workshop was incredibly informative and will greatly assist me with topics in my curriculum, such as human rights abuses. Martin's testimony was touching and emotional, inspiring us to take action to end discrimination within our local community and society at large."
Lessons for the Future
Hosting The National Holocaust Museum at the academy provided pupils with an extraordinary opportunity to learn from history and reflect on its lessons for the future. The event emphasised the importance of remembrance, understanding, and working towards a more inclusive and tolerant society.
